Information for Potential Musicians

All University of Michigan students are welcome to audition! Our membership is mostly undergraduate non-music majors. We have a significant number of graduate students and a few students from the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

The Michigan Pops Orchestra is a student-run and student-directed orchestra that functions as more of a "club" than a "class." Nevertheless, particpation in the orchestra is a serious commitment, and attendance at all rehearsals is expected.

Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 2-5 pm with few exceptions. They are located at Revelli Hall, which is near Elbel Field and the IM building. There is one concert per semester, usually on a Sunday night at 7:00 pm at the Michigan Theatre. Each semester, one dress rehearsal is held on a Wednesday night at the School of Music on North Campus. Carpools are provided for musicians living far from Revelli Hall, especially those on North Campus.

Pops members are serious about their musianship, and the orchestra works hard to prepare a polished concert. That being said, Pops is about more than just music. We like to have fun! Concerts include antics, skits, and occasionally home-made silent "films" that go along with the music (see our YouTube channel!). The Executive Board plans a variety of social events for orchestra members including potluck dinners, game-nights, interest groups, and parties. Rehearsals frequently include icebreaker games and snacks. Sections often get together for sectional dinners and other social events.

Pops is a family, and we would love for you to come join us!

Please email michiganpops@umich.edu with questions about the audition process and/or orchestra experience.

Small Ensembles

The Michigan Pops Orchestra runs a Small Ensembles Program for all University of Michigan students. Previous ensembles have included flute choirs, Pops-Capella, string orchestras, and more! Please contact Allison Podnar (apodnar@umich.edu), our Small Ensembles Director, for more information.

The Michigan Pops Jazz Band is a small group consisting of 10-15 students playing classical and contemporary jazz music. The group regularly plays gigs and is entirely student-run. Interested in joining? Contact Allison for more information!
